Not for me

Hard to recommend. The examples assume too much and explain too little.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The writing is direct and does not waste space on filler, which I value in a technical book. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. Two stars. The subject deserves a better treatment than this.

Better than I expected

Finally, a book that treats data visualization with the care it deserves.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.

Clear, thorough, and genuinely useful

Worth every page. I have already recommended it to two colleagues.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with data visualization.
