INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

Contacts and Constraints provides a comprehensive exploration of the systems that make real‑time physics simulation possible. Covering constraint solvers, collision response, numerical stability, contact generation, and the underlying mathematics, the book demystifies the inner workings of modern physics engines. It bridges theory and implementation, offering developers the tools and intuition needed to build reliable, predictable, and high‑performance physical interactions for games, simulations, and interactive applications.

A useful guide

I got a lot out of this, even if a few sections felt rushed.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

Good, with realistic expectations

A useful guide. The examples assume a particular environment, but that is fixable.

There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The chapters on physics simulation are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. Solid, and I would buy another book from this author without hesitation.

Not quite what I expected

Good in places. I would borrow it before buying if you can.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. Useful as a reference, less so as a straight read from cover to cover.
