INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

OpenCL Compute is a hands‑on introduction to heterogeneous programming, teaching developers how to harness the combined power of GPUs, CPUs, and accelerators using the OpenCL framework. The book breaks down the OpenCL execution model, memory hierarchy, kernel development, and performance optimization techniques. Through minimal working examples and clear explanations, readers learn how to write portable, high‑performance compute code that scales across devices and vendors. Ideal for programmers, researchers, and students looking to unlock parallel computing without being tied to a single hardware ecosystem.

Solid and well-organised

Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. Worth picking up if you already have the basics. Set realistic expectations and you will get a lot out of it.

Exactly what I was looking for

I have read a lot of books on this subject and this is the clearest.

I have been working with parallel programming for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. One of those books that pays for itself within the first few chapters. Highly recommended.

Recommended, with a caveat

Very good, with a few caveats. The core material is strong.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Solid, and I would buy another book from this author without hesitation.
